Ben Shelley: Reviewing this week's polls (June 27): Islanders Edition

I wonder what the numbers would look like if you didn't lump Greene and Pags into the same poll, because there isn't any controversy in renting a player to fill in for an injured starter. Hickey was injured, which was the Islanders first choice to fill in for Pelech, so there wasn't any other real choice.

Again, people are killing this trade at the potential of what the Isles could be giving up verses what they are getting
Lets break it down.

1. Isles did not detract from current roster.
2. Isles got a good 2nd/3rd line center.
3. Age 27
4. Faceoff winning percentage is 55.7 BEST on the current team.
5. Can play PP and PK
6. Wants to be here.
7. First rounder is conditional, Isles still have a shoot Alexis Lafreniere.
8. Oh and he is signed for the next 6 yrs.
9. Still have Dobson, Wahlstrom, Bellows, Boldie....

Draw backs:
1. First Round Pick
2. Second Round Pick
3. Conditional Third.
4. So we gave up a 1 & 2 because the Third ain't happening. For a solid center, that can score 25G, play the PP and the PK, and win draws consistently.
5. 6 maybe too long puts him at 33, five might have been better.

I wanted Pageau and I think he checked a lot of the boxes that The Isles were looking for in a 2/3 center. The contract was fair for both sides imho.

I like Pageau a lot and he's a perfect fit with the Islanders. All the points you made about him are completely accurate.

I would say the prospects you listed (New York's best) do not make for a deep prospect pool. That's one of my concerns.

I would also not be banking on Pageau scoring 25 goals again (especially not on a consistent basis). He was used in a large role in Ottawa and won't have the same opportunity with the Islanders, a much deeper team down the middle. I think 15 goals per year, potentially 20 on occasion, is a more accurate projection for him based on his year-to-year stats. An issue of mine is that the Islanders paid for how he produced this year but that's not something we can expect from him going forward.

In fairness, if Pageau is given equal PP time, I think he can produce, plus if given better linemates could help his 5x5 production as well, so to me, it remains to be seen
